arauco https://marau.co/Call-Center PROJECT INFO︎︎︎ Call Center Tijuana, MX Spring 2020 Option Studio Critics: Marcel Sanchez, Adriana Ceullar, Cesar Lopez Collaborators: Alicia Moreira Call centers in Tijuana are social enclaves of U.S. deportees, whose fluency in English makes them desirable candidates for call center work.&nbsp; At the same time, deportees have few other options for employment.&nbsp; As a result, these individuals experience a form of urban isolation which could be described as “archipelagic,” in that they are confined to a specific building type dispersed throughout the city.&nbsp; In a city that already includes many isolating and dividing edges, notably the US/Mexico border wall and the Tijuana River, this project illustrates how borders can be subverted, or used to ameliorate the conditions that they might create. This project specifically involves the re-interpretation of common architectural elements that delineate boundaries, namely walls and columns. A process of “thickening” allows these elements to serve as rooms. The perimeter wall which surrounds the site includes small amenities for public use— niches to meet, eat, or pray that are accessible from the street. The inner courtyard contained by “wall” includes larger public and semi-public amenities such as a clinic, gym, salon, public storage, and playing courts. All of these programs act as buffer zones or areas of overlap between workers and the general public. Inside the call center, the rows of columns that typically define the infinitely flexible modern interior expand into lounges, break rooms, kitchens, service rooms, bathrooms, and private call areas. These cross-shaped rooms (modeled after a cross column) allow desks to fill the corners, re-envisioning a typically hyper-dense configuration of workers and machines. Like molecules, the modularity or hierarchy of these rooms enables groupings or bonds to form as a means for organizing the interior. However, as the viewer investigates specific intersections between the creek and the boulevard, they will notice subtle deviations of the grid on either side of the creek. Certain blocks might converge, or the creek might wane and be redirected into a culvert. At times larger pieces of the urban fabric appear to shift, often until an adjacent stream meets the boulevard. An injection of new development into this “deviated” condition, the design proposal posits an architectural re-presence of the culverted Sausal Creek. Water has the ability both to challenge and adapt to the site conditions it creates— through its free-formedness and flow, water inspires “deviated spaces” which serve as housing courtyards. These spaces are designed to respond seasonally to the rain, as water is allowed to flood a sunken area. A canopy surrounding the northeast courtyard serves to collect irrigation water for community gardens within the space. Surrounding the central public spaces, housing adheres to contextual grids and site lines, and respects the building scale of the adjacent community. The facades of these structures, imagined as a flat vertical grid, are deviated via the use of angled entrances, and further broken orthogonally through a regulating curve which is a reflection of the undulating courtyard canopy. Sitting along this spatial edge are terraced greenhouses which feed water into the courtyard through small channels on the ground surface. The public spaces activated through this flow of water between the converging urban grids serve residents of the housing developments as well as pedestrians along the boulevard. Nested within this projected area of growth (formerly known as “the Hub”), this project condenses many public amenities for future neighboring residents. Neither adhering to seamless spatial adaptability nor exuberant form, the municipal condenser offers a determinate architecture, where program falls within a gradient of spatial types and sizes. The effect of such suggests program rather than firmly defines it, often generating a low resolution of congruence between form and use. It is neither tailored to program, yet not resistant to it. Despite this lack of specification to program, various disparate uses are accommodated. In a building containing forty-one rooms, a number of different civic programs requiring forty-one spaces find a home. These are rooms for deliberation, regardless of the use they contain— the deliberation of care, or of action, or of study. transactions between the living and the deceased. The revered distance runner Steve Prefontaine has received many such offerings— race-worn singlets, numbers, shoes, and medals accrue upon the rock in Eugene where he fatally crashed. In turn, those who pay tribute to “Pre” hope to be imbued by the spirit which defined him as a unique competitor. A pavilion with three chapels is conceived as a repository for public offerings and a place of repose for pilgrims to the rock. Chapels appear as a clear, linear sequence of spaces, yet they offer subtle variations in their architectural tectonics and affordances. Small alcoves for objects, wall heights, perforations, and antechamber configurations characterize use, view, noise and occupancy. Framed simply as a generic partitional element with a specific dimension and construction, the project uses a door to speculate around boundaries, ownership, and what it means to dwell today. For this exercise, we look at a house with four equally sized rooms. Here, the protective quality (function) of a doorstop is no longer present. As a result, varying degrees of damage are inflicted upon adjacent surfaces through the carelessness of a door’s users. Instead of patching the drywall and applying a fresh coat of paint, the residents decide to surgically carve new, clean cut surfaces behind the wreckage, a cycle that repeats with every unwarranted slam of the door. The original house, which employs the basic tenets of modern architecture as well as the mid-century style, was carefully taken into consideration when designing the new living quarters. The objective for the new space was to act as a reflection of the existing house, but simultaneously reinterpret its formal principles. In this sense, the dual structure shares almost a familial relationship: as both structures fall under the categorization of modern, they maintain different personalities. This particular site on Capitol Hill, an area that housed local brewery workers in the early 1900s, had likewise diminished and been declared off-limits for construction. In 2016, a new local zoning code once again made it possible to develop housing on this site, providing an opportunity to renew a lost facet of DC’s urban environment. The re-zoned lots, surrounded by alleys, suggested a building that would engage with pedestrians on multiple sides and explore the ambiguity of the alley condition to present various readings of “front.” With this approach in mind, all houses derive from a prototype with common architectural and site components, with each house offering its own variation from a “kit-of-parts” depending on the constraints of each lot.
